Analysing Mathematical Proofs (Or Reading Between the Lines)

چکیده

He study equation solving and analyse the solutions of experienced mathematicians. We find that traditional theorem proving methods are inadequate to explain the directness of these solutions, and that the well known algorithms for polynomials etc. are inadequate to explain the wide variety of equations solved. Our analysis reveals a system of high-level descriptions, strategies and goals, which can be used to guide the search through an explosively large search space. A few of these strategies will be investigated in detail. It is hoped that this analysis will eventually be incorporated into a computer program that solves equations.

The Effect of Critical Discourse Analysis Instruction on Iranian EFL Learners' Reading Comprehension and Orientation

This study was planned to investigate the effect of explicit teaching of some Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) techniques on Iranian EFL learners' Reading Comprehension. It was attempted to explore any change in the students’ abilities in revealing the implied meaning of the texts. Any change in the students’ views toward learning English was also explored in this study after critical reading ...

Lecture 2: Proofs

All of you must have proved lot of mathematical statements by now and have pretty good intuition about what proofs are. So we will take an informal approach of proofs. The ideas of rigorous and correct mathematical proofs will be shown through examples. A more formal approach can be taken through logic, a brief introduction to logic is given at the end of these course notes and is meant as an a...

Exploiting the Addressee's Inferential Capabilities in Presenting Mathematical Proofs

Proof presentation systems and, in some more general context, many natural language generation systems suffer from a crucial problem: they present too much information explicitly which the intended audience could more naturally infer from a less detailed text. Moreover, proofs in mathematical textbooks make extensive use of building chains of inferences in specialized notations, which is not su...

Reading 5 : Induction

In the last reading we began discussing proofs. We mentioned some proof paradigms that are generally applicable. For implications, we saw how to write a direct proof and an indirect proof. We saw how to prove equivalences by proving two implications and by constructing a chain of equivalences. We also saw two techniques applicable to proofs of any statements, namely proof by contradiction and p...

On the Relationship between Structure and Reference in Mathematical Discourse

We study the relationship between the structure of discourse and the use of referring expressions in the mathematical domain. We address linguistic, algorithmic as well as representation issues. We show how referential expressions refer to mathematical statements and how a knowledge intensive approach, domain reasoning with the use of proof plans, are used for discourse understanding. We propos...
